Cyprus Marine Club held a first Autumn presentation by Mr. Nicos Attas -Marine Chief Executive ,Marine and Offshore Division Bureau Veritas Cyprus entitled “ Guidance for Compliance with the forthcoming EU Ship Recycling and the Inventory Hazardous Material”.
The European Ship Recycling Regulation entered into force on December 30th, 2013 to reduce the negative impacts linked to the recycling of ships. It requires both shipowners and yards to take a procative approach to safety and environment protection in ship recycling with a special focus on management of hazardous materials. All new and existing ships of 500 gt and above , flying EU flag, must comply with EU SRR.
The majority of ships today are demolished in South east Asia , mainly by grounding ships on beaches and dismantling them there – practice low in cost but very polluting. In 2009 IMO introduced the Hong Kong International Convention for the safe recycling of ships and EU SRR closely follows the text of HKC and is designed to facilitate early adoption of the Convention.
50.000 Existing vessels are impacted by the regulation, including 22.000 that regularly call at an EU Port.
31.12.2020 is a deadline for EU flagged vessels to carry onboard verified IHM report with International IHM Certificate.
